Visits with Family and Friends (continued)

Blog Post #7 We left South Carolina and headed for Florida.  We stopped for lunch with Bob's former co-worker Rhonda and her husband Todd in Ormond Beach Florida on the Atlantic coast. Onto my sister Marsha's home near Orlando, Fl.  We spent 4 fun and relaxing days there just chilling and eating well!  Marsha loves to cook and that works out well cause we love to eat!  Toby enjoyed having a nice rest from driving.  He has his choice of cat toys to play with cause Rosie and Caesar (Marsha's cats) hid from him the whole time we were there.   On the way to Ormond Beach.  Live Oaks with Spanish moss hanging from them. Rhonda and Todd's home.  They only go inside to sleep I think.   Marsha made us shrimp scampi for our arrival and even had the Phillies game on.  We won't talk about the results of those two games 😢 The view from the pool to the pond.  Never get tired of water views. Marsha has some fruit trees.  The...

Visits with Family and Friends

Blog Post #6 One reason we traveled south before heading west was to see members of my family along the way.  First was my brother Vernon and his wife Julie.  That was our stop on the Eastern Shore (post #1).  Next was my brother Rick and his wife Sylvia in Bluffton, SC.  Bluffton is in the Low Country of South Carolina.  It's full of golf courses, marshes and wetlands, birds, and lots of retired people, so I felt right at home! A B&B in downtown Bluffton On the way to the Bluffton Seafood and Arts Festival (note Toby in stroller) My view from their patio with my morning tea. Out for some good low country seafood near Beaufort, SC.  The view is of Parris Island where  Marines recruits have their bootcamp.

Enjoying the sites and tastes of Charleston, South Carolina

Blog post #5 Charleston, SC is one of our favorite cities.  We love the architecture, art galleries, and most of all the food.  Toby managed well with all the walking, mainly because we borrowed a stroller for him!  It worked though; we were able to eat lunch outdoors while he sat in the stroller next to us!!!  We also found that he loves art.  Everytime we passed an art gallery, he wanted to go in.  And it's a very dog-friendly city, so they welcomed him in and even gave him treats. Grilled oysters Fried green tomatoes Shrimp & grits and jambalaya Question for my students :   What is the significance of Fort Sumter, located in Charleston Harbor? (You can answer in the comments if you want)

An interesting stop in Wilson, North Carolina

Blog post #4 After leaving Chincoteague, we stayed the night in Wilson, NC.  Why you ask?  Because Bob found a website that will tell you some of the interesting, quirky, or weird things around an area you're visiting.  So he found the Whirlygig Park in Wilson.  It was really amazing, but sadly it wasn't windy so almost nothing was moving.  One man built all these whirlygigs on his own property.  Eventually they were donated to the city and set up in a huge park.  Definitely worth the stop.

Chincoteague, VA

Blog post #3 Our next stop was Chincoteague, VA on the Atlantic coast where our dear friends Cathy & John own a condo right on the water bordering the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.  This area is famous for its wild ponies.  On the way, we went through Cambridge, MD which is where Harriet Tubman began her life and her mission to save as many as she could from the scourge of slavery.  The photo of a mural in town shows Harriet  as well as other influential African Americans in politics, science, and art. Chincoteague Lighthouse Marshland where the ponies like to graze Bob reading to the birds!! Beautiful sunsets

On the Eastern Shore of Maryland

Blog Entry #2 We arrived at my brother and sister-in-law's house near Denton MD.  Woke up to see mist rising and deer feeding in the field outside the guest house where we stayed.   Toby explored the new dock on the Tuckahoe Creek.  Outside the guest house

And So It Begins

Blog Entry #1   Dear friends, family and former students, After many months of thinking and planning, our road trip is about to begin.  Lists have been made and items crossed off as we get things moved into the car. Our plan is to travel down the east coast of the U.S. stopping along the way with family and friends.  Once we hit Florida, we will drive along the Gulf of Mexico going through Alabama, Mississippi, Louisana, Texas, New Mexico, and finally, Arizona by Thanksgiving! In this blog I will be posting about our trip with locations, photos and activities. I hope you enjoy following along with us!
